A heartbreaking discovery brought an end to the desperate search for a missing boy in Ipelegeng, near Schweizer-Reneke, when the body of 3-year-old Warona Karabo Meyer was found on Monday morning, 14 October 2024. The young child had mysteriously disappeared from his home in Extension 14 the previous day, initiating a frantic search by his family and local community.
In a heart-wrenching account to MORONGWA, a visibly shaken Lee-Anne Meyer, the boy’s mother, recounted the harrowing circumstances leading up to her child’s tragic death. She had sent Warona to dispose of trash, a task that was usually routine and harmless. However, on this fateful day, when he did not return home after a while, panic set in.
Unable to find Warona after a lengthy search, Lee-Anne took to social media, pleading with the community for their help to locate her son. Her plea was met with an outpouring of support, and a full-scale search was launched, with the police being notified about the missing child.
As the search extended into the next day, Lee-Anne began to suspect the worst, her fears centering around a sewage drain located behind their home. Her apprehensions were confirmed when, upon probing the waste pit, she saw her son’s hand appearing from the murky depths.
The police, who were promptly called to the scene, corroborated Lee-Anne’s account. They stated that they were alerted to the tragic discovery just after 07:00 am on that Monday. The local municipality was enlisted to help drain the sewage system, which revealed the horrifying truth: Warona’s body was trapped in the waste pit.
Chillingly, the sewage drain, dug and used by shop tenants on the property for waste disposal, had proven to be a deadly hazard due to its proximity to the family home.
In her grief, Lee-Anne painted a picture of Warona as a lively and spirited child who was a source of joy to those around him. His untimely death has left a void in the family that cannot be filled.
